Medical School Admissions
The excitement of getting your medical school acceptance letter is indescribable. You have no idea what you have signed up for and frankly you don’t care because this is the beginning of your own personal journey to becoming a doctor. For those of you who do get accepted, remember that there is a handful of your friends that have not been accepted.
The anguish and disappointment for those who do not get accepted anywhere is difficult and sticks with you for awhile. I have mentored many students who have been on the other side, where they have done everything right but still do not get accepted. It’s really difficult to bounce back and try again the next year because it’s not like you get feedback from the admissions office telling you what to work on, or what needs to be better, or what needs to be added or even what needs to be taken out. I am not an admissions officer and really couldn’t tell you what they are looking for but I do not that in general they want somebody who is not only smart, but genuine, hardworking, compassionate, generous and humble.
Aspiring physicians always ask me to look at their essays or applications and I am happy to because I know the qualities you need to be a great doctor. But again, I don’t know what the medical school your applying to wants. If you are in the boat where you did not get accepted into medical school, then this post is for you.
I was driving to work last week and came across a fascinating podcast about a medical school consulting program. And mind you, I have never met this individual other than listening to his interview on a podcast. I thought it would be a great resource to those aspiring doctors trying to get into to medical school. It is called Shemmassianconsulting.com. They have a group of talented academic consultants that help you get into medical school. They have a plethora of services for you, including where you should apply to maximize your chance of getting in to medical school, how to write and refine your personal statement, how to enhance or highlight or extracurricular activities, how to interview successfully and MCAT tutoring. This is only a couple of their services but this group is dedicated to helping you get into medical school. I wish they were around when I was applying. Again, I don’t know the founder but he was very compassionate, honest and available to help you, so please check out their website. It might just help you to get that acceptance letter . . . and you deserve it!
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask my any questions.
Please stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Your MedMentor

I thought it was really interesting that there is an actual website and people that are there to help you achieve your goal of becoming a med student. How long on average does it take for medical students to get accepted into medical school if they get declined?
Very good question. Not everyone who applies the first time make it into medical school. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) approximately 54% of applicants get rejected to every medical school they applied. Some people apply multiple times. This number is not meant to scare or hinder you from applying to medical school, it is just really important to be prepared and know what they expect and look for in an applicant. This is one of the reasons I started this blog is to help you circumvent through this journey and hopefully make it easier for others to pursue their dreams.
I thought it was really cool that you shared some experiences you had with people and getting into medical school because I really didn’t understand how hard it was to get in and that you could do everything right and still not get in.
Dear MedMentor, Thanks for this great article. My dad applied to med school 4 times and finally got in the 4th time. He is a successful surgeon now. I think it is a great idea to use a consultant to help with the process. How many schools do you recommend applying to? Thank you.
I am a high school student aspiring to be in the medical field and I had no I idea what it took to get into medical school! It must be really hard not knowing why you didn’t get in and how you can fix it for next time. Thank you so much for these articles!!
I liked the experiences you shared with other people.
I really appreciate how you shared your experiences with helping others and giving some insight on how to even begin! I aspire to be in the medical field and I love these articles! I never really knew how hard it may be to get into medical school especially if you have no idea what you may have done wrong the first time applying. I think it was interesting that they give you no feedback to your application and you have to just bounce back like that. Anyways, how many different medical schools do you suggest applying to?
Good question. I think you need to apply to many schools and all over the country to increase your chances of getting accepted. I do not have a magic number but please don’t limit yourself to a particular region. For example, if you are from the west coast, apply to schools in the south or east coast, don’t limit yourself to schools only on the west coast. You have to remain open-minded and willing to move anywhere.
Very neat article post. Much thanks again. Awesome. Marleen Dov Fabyola
