I am a surgeon. And I love it. Some say I went to the dark side . . .
But the OR is my happy place. It is my sanctuary, my breath of fresh air, my temple. You get the point.
I knew that I wanted to go into surgery when I shadowed a surgeon prior to entering medical school. I also shadowed non-surgical specialties and it just wasn’t for me. This is the part when you really need to listen to that inner voice, the grumble in your stomach. If you don’t listen to that inner voice then something else will pull you into a specialty that you might not love. And once you set on the path and move into residency it gets much harder to change that path. It can and has been done but it is difficult.
Surgery life is hard. Absolutely! The surgical residencies are brutal. It will take everything out of you emotionally and physically but if it is truly what you want to do – It is all well worth it.
If you don’t want to be a surgeon it does not mean I can’t help you. I have tons of friends who are not surgeons and can be easily accessed to help you find your path or answer your questions. This site is for you. Please don’t hesitate to ask. There are no stupid questions. If you have never been down this path how are you going to know. I wish I had somebody to ask questions to during my journey. I may have been more prepared mentally. My path may have been smoother. To be honest, I was afraid to ask questions because I thought people would think I was stupid. That part I regret. So I want to give back to you. I want you to succeed because we need great doctors you have had great experiences in their training and are excited to help people in whatever specialty you choose.
